Auschwitz survivors have pleaded to the world to not let anything like the Holocaust happen again at a ceremony marking 70 years since the camps liberation.

"We survivors do not want our past to be our children's future," Roman Kent, born in 1929, told the memorial at the Polish death camp.

300 survivors turned up for the ceremony today and gathered under a giant tent.

The death camp was responsible for deaths of 1.1 million people, most of them Jewish.

Today's anniversary is expected to be the last major event survivors will be able to attend in big numbers.

President of the World Jewish Congress Ronald S Lauder today told the memorial: "Jews are targeted in Europe once again because they are Jews."

"Once again young Jewish boys are afraid to wear yarmulkes [skullcaps] on the streets of Paris, Budapest, London and even Berlin."
