HIV is becoming less deadly and infectious according to a major scientific study.

The team at the Oxford University shows the virus being 'watered down' as it 'adapts' to our immune system.

Some virologists are suggesting the virus may eventually turn "almost harmless" as it continues to evolve.

35 million people are thought to be infected with the disease. A deadly battle between the immune system and HIV then takes place.

Professer Andrew Freeman, a reader in deadly diseases at Cardiff University told BBC News: "It's an intriguing study.

"We're an awfully long way from the virus becoming harmless.

"Other events will supersede that including wider access to treatment and eventually the development of a cure".
